B.A.T. INSTRUCTOR. Youth volunteers 15 years and older are trained and certified in basic First Aid, in order to teach younger children life-saving skills. DISASTER PREPAREDNESS PUPPET SHOW: Youth volunteers incorporate Sesame Street puppets with earthquake preparedness and fire safety tapes, to put on live puppet shows for children in various organizations and elementary schools. This is an entertaining and exciting interactive opportunity for young kids to learn life-saving skills and be educated in disaster preparedness. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT CENTER: A week-long camp where youth will have the opportunity to grow, develop, and mature by learning to work in groups, discover the value of helping others, make new friends, and have fun. The goals of LDC are to create youth leaders with the potential to better themselves and their communities, and to involve youth in the American Red Cross and other service organizations. RED CROSS YOUTH COUNCIL: Gives youth volunteers the opportunity to develop their leadership and interpersonal skills by getting involved as an American Red Cross officer. Positions include chairperson, vice-chair, secretary/historian, and fundraising chair. The Youth Council plans monthly events and holds general youth meetings at the Chapter on the second Monday of each month. Meetings are open to all youth interested in volunteering for the American Red Cross. Officers are also responsible for duties unique to their specific office. S.A.F.E. KIDS TRAINING: This event is an opportunity for children ages 8-12 years to be trained in life-saving skills. Youth volunteers teach the course as basic aid instructors. Includes the basics of first aid and rescue breathing, Longfellow's Whale Tales that teach water safety in a creative way using a friendly whale, and disaster preparedness. Y-HAVE: Provides HIV/AIDS education and prevention skills for Junior High and High School students of all religious, racial, economic, and ethnic backgrounds. Youth serve as peer educators to inform other youth about the myths and facts of HIV/AIDS. Y.i.E.S. YOUTH IN EMERGENCY SERVICES PROGRAM: Consists of high school youth trained in emergency services provided by the American Red Cross. Participating high school students will learn how to prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters. YOUTH VOLUNTEER SERVICE CORPS: Leadership Development Center five-day leadership camp for youth 14-19; disaster training and instruction in teaching peers health and safety. Takes place in August. Fee based, but call for scholarship information. YOUTH VOLUNTEER SERVICE CORPS HOLIDAY PROJECT: The Greater Long Beach Chapter of the American Red Cross hosts a holiday party for children from underprivileged communities. This is an opportunity to make a difference in a child's life during the holiday season.
